FCA Academies
The Flow Coaching Academy (FCA) aim was to create a culture of continuous improvement across the UK by building the capability of NHS Providers in its network to be able to deliver its replicable training model. The FCA in Sheffield adopted the academy approach, delivering training to groups of staff at various NHS trusts who could then go on to implement and deliver the course in their local Trusts. To become an established FCA, organisations complete a three-year training programme.
The first trained academy was in 2016, by 2020, 11 organisations across the UK had set up local FCA’s. If your organisation trained as an academy and would like to be included in the list below, please contact sth.fca@nhs.net
Below is a list of active and paused FCA academies (Accurate at the time of publishing in April 2024)
FCA Sheffield (Paused)
The FCA was founded by the team in Sheffield in 2016 and was born out of the success of the Flow Cost Quality Programme and the Microsystem Coaching Academy at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Health Foundation granted funding to replicate and scale up the success of the work nationally. FCA Sheffield led the way and trained all subsequent academies until 2024 when it transitioned to make the methodology open source via this site and passed the baton of training to FCA Lancashire.

FCA Lancashire (Active)
The FCA in Lancashire established its faculty in 2019 after training with the FCA Sheffield and began training Flow Coaches in their own organisation. They have since trained 4 cohorts and have 29 Big Rooms running. Lancashire took over the central delivery of the FCA programme in April 2024 and offer training for Flow Coaches on the ‘Improving with people first course’ and are open to training new academies within other NHS Provider organisations.
FCA Northumbria (Paused)
The FCA Northumbria established in 2018 and trained 2 cohorts in person and 2 cohorts using our hybrid method, establishing over 35 coaches and a range of Big Rooms across their organisation. The team decided to pause training in 2024, but continue to use the FCA approach and e-learning in their organisation to support the delivery of their local quality improvement strategy.
