Improvement capability to be built in 32 coaches

This week, the Flow Coaching Academy (FCA) restarted training its first Lancashire and South Cumbria cohort after the programme was put on hold last year due to the pandemic.

Welcoming back 32 coaches, the team are now delivering the programme virtually with course completion expected in December 2021.

As part of the course, participants learn the skills required to co-coach a weekly improvement meeting known as a Big Room – which brings together staff, patients and carers from a chosen patient pathway.

The relaunch of the programme has seen the launch of 3 new Big Rooms which will focus on how patients experience care in the Enhanced Care, Lung Cancer and End of Life pathways.

These add to the already successful Colorectal Cancer, Acute Frailty, Sepsis and Inflammatory Bowel Disorder (IBD) Big Rooms established in Lancashire and South Cumbria in 2020 by trained FCA coaches.

Stuart Clough, Associate Director for Continuous Improvement at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals said: “Following the restart of our training cohort, it is fantastic to see some of our FCA coach’s setup up their Big Rooms with such enthusiasm. We are looking forward to hearing their stories at our next session in May.”

Anne Kirkham, Lead Nurse on the COVID Vaccination Programme at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals and co-coach of the Enhanced Care Big Room said: “It was great to be part of the launch event for Enhanced Care [Big Room] at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, bridging the gap between wards and critical care.

Sarah Cullen, Nursing, Midwifery & Allied Health Professionals Director at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals and co-coach of the End of Life Big Room added: “It has been great fun and quite empowering to be encouraged to have fun, and at times I think this has shocked people. The feeling in the [Big Room] early on was to be open. I’m really excited to be working in this way.”

The Lancashire and South Cumbria team were recently shortlisted in the HSJ Patient Value Awards 2021 for their work in the Colorectal Cancer Big Room. They have also successfully streamlined services for frail patients at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
